Somatic Parts Work: From CEO to Consultant

6 min read

You cannot think your way out of trauma. You cannot force your body to relax.

If either of those has been true for you, you already understand why parts work exists, and you probably arrived here having tried the other route first. You read the books, you understood the pattern, and you could explain your own history to a stranger in about four minutes. And none of that stopped the reaction from arriving on schedule.

Understanding is not the same as change. That gap is where this work lives.

The part of you that is exhausted is the part that is protecting you

Most people come in wanting to get rid of something. The anxiety, the bracing, the armoring, the voice that will not stop planning, and the instinct is to treat all of it as the enemy and remove it.

Parts work starts somewhere else. It treats that thing as a Protector: a part of you that is working overtime to keep you safe. Not a malfunction, but a strategy that worked, adopted at a time when it was needed and never retired.

When you fight a Protector, it protects harder. That is what it is for. When you honor its role, internal resistance lowers naturally, and it lowers without you having to force anything. I have watched this happen more times than I can count, and it still surprises me how fast it can be once the part stops being treated as a problem.

The Survivor Self and the Young Self

The Tamura Method works with a specific dynamic between two of these parts.

The Survivor Self is conscious and future-oriented. It plans, it controls, it anticipates, and it runs scenarios at two in the morning. It is the part that has kept you functioning, often through things that genuinely required it.

The Young Self is subconscious, and it holds the wounds and the memories.

Most of the time they stay in their own lanes. Then something happens that rhymes with the past, and the Young Self blends with the Survivor Self. That word matters. It is not that you remember something. It is that the younger part fuses with the one currently driving, and your response arrives already shaped by pain that is not about today.

You know this from the inside. It is the argument where your reaction is three sizes too big for the thing that caused it, and you can see that even while it is happening, and seeing it does not slow it down at all.

Why this goes through the body

Here is where the method stops being a theory.

You cannot talk a blended part into unblending, because the blend is not happening in language. Through energetic touch and sensory awareness, we create conditions where the protective part can relax enough that what is underneath becomes noticeable.

That is the whole mechanism, and I want to be precise about the order. The Protector relaxes first, and what it was guarding becomes noticeable second. Doing it the other way around, going after the wound while the guard is still up, is how people get flooded, and being flooded teaches the system that this is not safe.

So we work at the pace the Protector allows, and that pace is neither negotiable nor mine to set.

From CEO to Consultant

As the True Self, the calm and compassionate center, emerges to witness this, something shifts in the arrangement rather than in your personality.

The Survivor Self has been acting as CEO. It has been making every decision, scanning every room, carrying responsibility for outcomes it cannot actually control. It took that job because at some point nobody else was going to.

The work is not to fire it. It is to let it step back into its natural role as Consultant. Still wise, still strategic, and still the first to notice when something is off. But no longer required to run the whole operation alone, because it is beginning to trust the True Self to lead.

I have never found a better description of what a good session actually changes. Nothing is removed. The furniture gets rearranged, and the part that was doing three jobs goes back to doing the one it is genuinely good at.

Where this went in my own work

My integration of these principles and Internal Family Systems evolved into Capacity for Self Listening, the inner pillar of the Capacity for Self Method. The change I made was to bring parts work into the body rather than keeping it in the mind, which is the thing the mind cannot do for itself.

I should be plain about what this is and is not. This is not psychotherapy, and I am not a psychotherapist. I do not diagnose or treat anything. I work with the person, and I work through the body. If what you are carrying needs a licensed clinician, I will say so, and I would rather say so early than be the reason you waited.

Something you can try before you book anything

The next time you notice the planning voice starting up, do not argue with it and do not try to quiet it.

Instead, find where it is in your body. Most people find it somewhere between the jaw and the sternum. Put a hand there. Then say, silently, some version of: I know what you are doing, and I know why.

Then wait, and notice whether anything changes.

Sometimes nothing does, and sometimes the shoulders drop half an inch. Either result is information, and the noticing is the practice.

If you want to do this work with support, sessions are in Cotati and I also travel. The free phone consultation is where we find out whether this is the right fit, and it is genuinely fine to use that call to decide it is not.
