Capacity for Self Dance™

Integration in motion. Each part of you gets a turn to move.

Join a Capacity for Self Dance Session

Capacity for Self Dance is a movement practice that gives each part of you a turn to express, with music chosen to support that expression, in a space that holds the work safely.

Integration is something the body does, not something the mind decides. The other pillars of the Method do their patient work in the inner landscape, in the tissue, and in the field. They build something inside you. And then there comes a moment when what has been built privately wants to move. Not to think about moving, not to plan a gesture and execute it, but to actually move, freely, without choreography, in front of music, with other bodies doing the same thing.

That is what Dance is for. It is where everything the pillars built in the still parts of the practice finds its expression in motion.

It is taught as a standalone practice, open to anyone, with no prerequisite training in the Method. You don't need to know any of the framework to walk in and dance. Knowing it only deepens what the class can do for you. These gatherings are intentional, conscious, and alcohol-free.

Each Part Gets a Turn

Every class opens by thanking the body, the part of us that has held what we could not yet process and waited patiently while the mind ran the show. From there, the session moves through four sections. Each one gives a different part of you its own music and its own turn to move.

1

The Survivor Self

The first music is chosen for the part of you that runs the show. Vigilant, driving, built around a strong rhythmic spine the strategist in you can lock onto. This is its time to move, however it wants to. Some bodies stomp, some pace, some move sharp and then stop and then move sharp again. It doesn't have to be graceful. It is the way a tightly wound system moves when it is finally given permission to let go. For many people this is the section where the part that plans and controls softens for the first time in years.

2

The Young Self

The music shifts, more emotional, often slower or flowing, sometimes tender, sometimes playful in a way that touches what was never allowed to play. This is the body's time. The movements that surface here are often the ones that surprise you: a gesture that finishes a motion the body started long ago and never got to complete, tears that come without sadness, laughter that comes without a joke. Most of the release happens here. The body has been waiting for the invitation.

3

The True Self

The music opens rather than drives. Present, alive, spacious. This is the part of you that simply is, right now, in this body, in this room, with this sound. The movement turns intuitive in a way you may not have felt before, each gesture arriving from real-time knowing rather than choreography. You become a witness to your own expression as it emerges, one motion at a time.

4

All Three Together

The final section is integration. All three parts are invited to move together. Sometimes the Survivor Self surfaces and steps back, sometimes the Young Self comes forward and settles, sometimes the True Self leads for a long stretch. They weave in and out, taking turns, collaborating. After each part has had its turn, the system gets to feel itself as a whole. Not as an idea, but as something the body knows directly.

Movement as Medicine

The body stores everything the mind tries to forget. Tension, grief, unexpressed rage, old joy, it all lives in the tissue, the posture, the breath. Dance gives the body a language that doesn't need words.

This is not choreography. There are no steps to learn and no technique to perfect. It is not performance. There is no audience, and the dance is for the dancer, not for anyone watching. No experience and no flexibility required.

Dance is older than psychology, older than any modern name we have for this kind of work. Every culture has danced. Every ceremony, every rite of passage, every shared grief and collective joy has had movement at its center. It is one of the oldest practices we have for coming home to the body, and this class simply makes room for it to do what it has always done.

I bring this work to all sorts of gatherings: music festivals, medicine ceremonies, ecstatic dance events, yoga studios, retreats, private and corporate gatherings, and more.

Before the Experience

Abstain from caffeine, sugar, and heavy meals at least 3 hours beforehand.

Phones and smart watches: Turn off or put in Airplane Mode. Set to Do Not Disturb, vibrations off, alarms turned off.

Notice how difficult it may be to permit yourself to fully unplug from these things. This could be a place where increased awareness may lend itself toward releasing dependency on technology and social media.

This work is somatic education and complementary care. Read full scope of practice →

From Capacity for Self Dance to the Capacity for Self Method™

Capacity for Self Dance activates the body's innate movement intelligence, the same intelligence that the Capacity for Self Method™ works with across all its modalities. When combined with structural release, somatic awareness, and energetic balancing, movement becomes a gateway to deeper integration and lasting transformation.
